What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear test is an effective preventive care method designed to detect cervical cell abnormalities and cervical cancer. During your test, Dr. Jafari collects cells from your cervix for analysis.

Dr. Jafari usually recommends Pap tests every three years for women age 21 to 65. If you have a higher risk for developing cervical cancer or if you have certain underlying medical conditions, you might need testing more frequently.

At the same time as your pap smear test, Dr. Jafari can also perform a test for human papillomavirus (HPV).

What can I expect at my Pap smear test?

Pap smear tests can be conveniently and quickly performed in-office. Usually, you undress, wear a medical gown, and lie on a special exam table with your knees bent and your feet in stirrups.

To view your cervix, when you’re comfortable and ready, Dr. Jafari gently inserts a speculum into your vagina to hold open the vaginal walls.

Using a special scraping tool or a soft, small brush, Dr. Jafari takes a sample of your cervical cells and sends it to a lab to be analyzed for any abnormalities or signs that could indicate cancer or precancerous cells.

What if the results of my Pap smear test are abnormal?

Don’t panic if your Pap smear results come back showing the presence of unusual cells. It’s not uncommon to have a one-off “abnormal” result, and almost everyone experiences this at some point in their life. Depending on the result, Dr. Jafari may reanalyze the sample, take another sample, or conduct additional diagnostic testing.

You might need a colposcopy if you have abnormal pap smear test results. During a colposcopy, Dr. Jafari utilizes a special magnifying instrument to assess your cervix more closely.

Dr. Jafari might recommend a colposcopy if you have abnormal pelvic bleeding or concerns about pelvic pain. A colposcopy can be used to assess:

  • Genital warts on the cervix
  • Inflammation of the cervix
  • Noncancerous growths or polyps on the cervix

If Dr. Jafari detects any abnormal cells during your colposcopy, she might recommend a procedure to remove the abnormal cells or other treatments.
