Chemical Peel Q&A

What are chemical peels?

A chemical peel is a nonsurgical cosmetic treatment that improves the tone and texture of your skin. It can enhance the appearance of the skin on your face, neck, and hands.

Chemical peels work by gently exfoliating the surface layer of your skin. The surface of your skin contains old, damaged cells from years of sun exposure, makeup, dirt and grime, and other bacteria. By sloughing off this surface layer, chemical peels reveal the fresh, new skin underneath.

What can chemical peels treat?

With many different types of chemical peels to choose from, these nonsurgical treatments can reduce the appearance of many common skin concerns, such as:

  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dull skin
  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Enlarged pores
  • Mild surface scarring
  • Rosacea and redness

After evaluating your skin, your Texas Premier Physicians P.A. provider can determine the right type of chemical peel for you.

What are the different types of chemical peels?

Texas Premier Physicians P.A. offers three different types of chemical peels. Your provider can recommend a suitable peel for your skin, depending on your age, skin type, and the severity of the skin concerns you want to treat.

The three main types of chemical peels are:

Glycolic acid peel

Glycolic acid is a form of alpha-hydroxy acid, which contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. This peel penetrates the surface and middle layers of your skin for enhanced efficacy. Glycolic acid peels are especially effective at treating acne, as they can lift excess oils from the hair follicles in your skin.

They also reduce the production of melanin, which adds pigment to your skin, so these peels are common treatments for brown spots and hyperpigmentation.

Salicylic acid peel

Salicylic acid is a type of acid commonly found in acne treatments. Not only does it contain anti-inflammatory properties, but salicylic acid also unclogs the dead skin cells and oils that cause acne. It’s a gentle type of chemical peel that can also reduce the appearance of melasma and freckles.

Trichloroacetic acid peel

Trichloroacetic acid peels are available in varying strengths, from mild and medium to deep. The treatment effectively removes dead skin cells, oil, bacteria, and other built-up debris from your skin. This type of chemical peel is an effective treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, and hyperpigmentation.

Most chemical peels take about 30 minutes to apply. Over the coming hours and days, your skin should begin to dry, crack, and slough off to reveal the fresh skin underneath.
